isnt "such great heights" by iron and wine? Iron and Wine did a cover. I prefer the Iron and Wine version, though.

Iron and Wine did a cover. I prefer the Iron and Wine version, though. i hate it when bands do covers of perfectly good songs. like the band that covered the cure's love song, eeh they made it sound all crappy, and everyone thought the song was originally by them. i'm sure iron and wine's version is nothing better than the postal service's. cover bands are losers especially since "such great heights" isnt even old enough to be covered. ick, gross.

Iron and Wine isn't a cover man. He's a great indie artist. He doesn't make it worse. I just like it more because he uses an acoustic guitar. I love both versions though. =X

i dislike covers as well such that of korn's cover of another brick in the wall, mettalica's cover of thin lizzy's whiskey in the jar, and limp biscut's cover of the who's behind blue eyes
but the WORST cover ever was tool's cover of led zeppelin's no quarter, i mean tool changed the lyrics which is wrong on so many levels

There's nothing wrong with a cover as long as it's ok. If a band likes a song and they want to cover it, I see nothing wrong with that unless they make it sound shitty. A perfect example of a shitty cover, I agree, is 311's cover of Love Song. It's terrible and gives me a headache, but the version by The Cure is great. A lot of covers are bad, some are quite good though.
On to the actual topic, the bands you named are of a genre that makes up a huge portion of the only good new music. The other portions in my opinion would be hardcore and progressive type stuff because it's more original. Indie is just good music in general.

Yeah I just don't see the point of covers.. just leave the song alone.. especially if it's already good. 311's cover of Love Song was terrible.. it pretty much ruined the song for me. Especially because a lot of people thought that 311 wrote the song, and didn't know it was orignally by The Cure.

Well, an example of a good cover in my opinion is the cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Head like a Hole" by Most Precious Blood. The band in my sig is doing a cover of the song "Bite the Wax Tadpole" by Tub Ring, but only to see how they sound together.

Do you like the originals better, or the covers? Or are they just different?..

I generally like originals better, almost always, because the original is just that: original. But, sometimes a cover can still hold the same musical value with a new twist, sometimes brutalizing the song, sometimes making it sound a little more fresh. Sometimes it's just a revival of an old classic for a new generation to enjoy, although the covers of classic rock songs usually suck.
