Probably not what you're looking for, but I think these bands are pretty stellar: Against Me!Aqualung Ben Folds Five Broken Social SceneThe Decemberists The Dresden Dolls Hot Hot Heat Lacuna Coil Ladytron Lola Ray Mates of State Muse My Bloody Valentine Portishead The Postal Service The Shins Snow Patrol The Stills Tegan & Sara Within Temptation Yeah Yeah Yeahs Yo La Tengo I've heard of every one of those. If they're not what they're looking for then post them on the favorite bands topic. Not TOO well known as far as I know: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum Something you might have heard of: Mindless Self Indulgence

If you're looking for a good 'jam' band, you might be into: Godspeed, you black emperor! They're instrumental, and quite good.

I'm gonna throw in ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead's Source Tags & Codes. Though it doesn't exactly have jam sessions, there are instrumental parts in the songs, and the album is damn good.
